William H. F. Spencer
William Hurlbut Force Spencer, aged 92, died peacefully at home in Newport, Rhode Island on May 15, 2022. Born in Newport on August 13,1929 to Katherine Force Spencer and Major
Lorillard Spencer III, of Chastellux Ave., he attended St. Paul's School, then Yale University '51, where he graduated with a BS in Industrial Admin. A Lieutenant JG in the United States Navy, Bill served from 1951 to 1954, as operations officer aboard the
USS Hemminger. He began his career as an engineer at Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, CT, but found himself drawn to teaching. Bill then obtained a master's degree and taught mathematics at Roger Ludlowe High School in Fairfield, CT.
In 1973, Bill retired to Antigua, West Indies, where he lived and chartered aboard the ketch Lion's Paw. Ultimately, Bill returned home to Newport, where he lived his final years gratefully surrounded
by family and friends. A man of many interests, Bill was an avid birder and bridge player. He never missed a Sunday NYT crossword puzzle, and authored a bi-lingual reference for French-American culinary terminology, Market, Kitchen & Table. (1983).
Bill is survived by his sister-in-law Marjorie Potts Spencer, of Newport, RI, daughter Elizabeth Spencer Ciullo of Saco, ME, stepdaughters Linda Burr Wales of Roque
Bluffs, ME and Susan Colleen Taylor of Woodside, DE, daughter-in-law Sandra Paonessa Spencer of Sanibel, FL, and grandchildren Elizabeth A Spencer of Los Olivos, CA, Katherine M Spencer of Raymond, NH, Wayne J. Ciullo of Hingham, MA, Samantha L. C. Parlin
of Gorham, ME, and Daniel W. Ciullo of Saco, ME, Amy W. Reilly of Stevensville, MD, Emily W. Satterwhite of Richmond VA, and Colleen T. Brittingham of Claremont, FL as well as many nieces, nephews, and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, William
Force Spencer of Sanibel, FL, sister Katherine Spencer Doherty, brother Stephen Wolcott Spencer, and brother-in-law Joseph H. Doherty, all of Newport RI, and half-brother Lorillard Suydam Spencer of Billings, MT.
No formal service is planned at this time. A final gathering in his honor will be coordinated with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please

Sad News: Larry Bush ( School Psychologist 40+ years)
Lawrence G. Bush, Jr., age 86 of Trumbull passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at Regional Hospice of Danbury surrounded by his loving family. Born in Derby on July 13, 1935, he was a son of the late Lawrence G. and Elizabeth (Horan) Bush,
Sr. Mr. Bush had served his country proudly and honorably in the U.S. Army before obtaining his undergraduate degree in industrial arts at Central Connecticut State University. A highly educated man, he then obtained his Master's Degree in Guidance Counseling
from the University of Bridgeport before subsequently earning his 6th year Certificate from Fairfield University and 7th year from Southern Connecticut State University. Mr. Bush enjoyed a long career as a school psychologist in the Fairfield School System
before his retirement with over 40 years of dedicated service. His retirement revolved around his favorite pastime of golfing and he was often found on the course at Tashua Knolls with his friends. He was an avid sports car and motorcycle enthusiast, however,
his greatest enjoyment was found in the time he spent surrounded by his family. A loving and devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend of many.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, including his loving children, Cathy Bush
of Trumbull and Evan Bush and his wife Colleen of Oxford, his cherished grandchildren, Jillian and Sarah McStravick, Sean, Emily and Brody Bush, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Bush and his sister, Annette Gambaccini.
Friends may greet the family on Monday, March 21, 2022 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull. A prayer service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be held privately at
the convenience of the family.

Larry Bush:
What a loss! He was considered to be our “Chairmen of the Board”… an iconic leader of a close knit group of school psychologist from 1974 to 2002….my mentor and confidant…always ready to listen to the troubles of his students and peers. He would acknowledge our concerns with down to earth, insightful, comforting, and often hilarious responses. Those were the days when we worked as a team always with the student’s best interest in mind…even if we had to step outside of some boundaries and risk alienating our bosses. All that and he was the handsomest of us all. Those were the best of days…I really miss them and LARRY.

Sad News: Andrew Bednarik (Ret. 2008 FLHS Biology)
Andrew “Dr. B” Bednarik exited this world on March 10, 2022 at the age of 73. Though it was of natural causes, he’d probably like us to make up something more compelling, but nothing could be more compelling than the life he lived.
Growing up in Shelton, CT, Andy became a musician, a scientist, a lover of learning, and a gentle human willing to lend a hand to anyone.
After receiving his PHD at Purdue University in entomology, Andy went on to work in research and publish scientific papers. In fact, an insect will forever exist in this world bearing his name. He found his true purpose in life as an AP Biology high school teacher in the Fairfield School District. Aside from his family, there was nothing in this world that brought him more joy than showing the youth the world of science. In fact, even upon retiring as a high school teacher, he went on to continue to teach biology at the college level until he moved to Florida to enjoy the warm sunshine.
He is predeceased by his father Andrew and mother Natalie. He is survived by his loving wife Emma and his daughters Amanda and Emily, and sister Kathleen.
There will be a private memorial mass for immediate family members held for Andy in St. Augustine, Florida. He would love it if you took a moment to really appreciate an insect you see out in the world today, as he did daily.

Sad News: Wiley Edward Bowling Jr. (Ret. 1996 Industrial Arts Dept. Coordinator, RLHS))
Wiley Edward Bowling Jr. (November 29, 1931 - March 2, 2022)
Wiley Edward Bowling, Jr. entered into eternal rest. Wiley was born November 29, 1931 in Durham, NC to Amy Claresta Jones Bowling and Wiley E. Bowling, Sr. He was educated in Durham public Schools and graduated from NC A&T State University,
where he met and married the love of his life, Magalene Lee. They had two children, Mark and Joyce. After graduation, Wiley served in the Army at Ft. Huachuca, AZ, and after his discharge, the family settled in Milford, CT. Wiley spent the majority of his
career as a teacher and administrator in the Fairfield Public Schools Industrial Education Department. After his retirement, Magalene and Wiley moved to Bowie, MD. Throughout his life, Wiley was active in his church, his college alumni association, Alpha Phi
Alpha Fraternity, Inc, and the NAACP. He was passionate about being politically active in the community, and securing equal rights for African Americans. He enjoyed singing with his church choir, and woodworking projects. Wiley is survived by his daughter
Joyce, 5 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. Friends and family are invited to celebrate his life on March 17, 2022 at Shiloh Baptist Church, 1510 9th St. NW, Washington, DC 20001. Visitation will be from 10-11am and
the Celebration of Life will be at 11am. Private interment will take place at Cheltenham Cemetery. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to NC A&T Foundation, and sent to the Advancement Office, NC A&T State University, 1601 E. Market St., Greensboro,

Sad News: JoAnn Raguseo (Deaf Education, N Stratfield))
JoAnn Rose Raguseo, 71, of Norwalk, passed away on February 15th as a result of a
three week battle with Covid-19. JoAnn was born in Norwalk, CT on February 18, 1950, the daughter of the late Rose (Garofalo) and Joesph Raguseo. She graduated from Brien McMahon High School, and the University of Connecticut at Storrs with a degree in Education.
She earned a Master's Degree in deaf education from Gallaudet College.
She spent her career in education primarily focused on teaching hearing impaired students. She taught in North Dakota, Texas and
for many years in the Fairfield Public Schools. She loved and took pride in all her students' accomplishments.
JoAnn was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where
she served an 18 month mission to Roanoke, VA and was also President of the Relief Society in Norwalk from 1997-1999. She also served as a supervisor at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Manhattan Temple. She was a true example of Christ like
service to her church family.
JoAnn is survived by her sister Theresa Letellier (Gil) of Bethel; nieces Nicole Jenkins (Brent) of Chatham, NJ and Monique Letellier of Bethel. She is also survived by
her grandnephew and nieces Dylan, Katherine and Lindsey Jenkins of Chatham as well as many cousins and friends.
Funeral services
will be held on Saturday, February 19, 10 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 682 South Avenue, New Canaan, CT 06840. The family requests that all attendees wear a mask.

Sad News: Ralph Minopoli ( ret 1992 Chemistry FfldH)
Ralph Albert Minopoli of Charlestown, RI passed away peacefully while in the care of his devoted wife Mary (Canevari) of 65 years, and loving daughter, Elene. The son of Albert and Mary (Colonnese) was born on 13 February 1930. He attended St. Augustine School, Central High School 1949, and UCONN School of Pharmacy 1953. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he began his career at the Ethical Pharmacy. A few years later, he went on to become a teacher of science at Roger Ludlow High School for 30 years. Many students kept in touch and Ralph was deeply honored to be recognized as one of the three teachers mentioned in the speech by Dr. William Kaelin upon receiving the 2019 Noble Prize. His pharmacy career was still active at Switzers Pharmacy in Southport for 40 years. Upon retirement, he never forgot science and volunteered for the Salt Pond Coalition testing on Ninigret Pond in Charlestown. He and Mary became library volunteers and spent 20 years with the URI Master Gardener program. Ralph was an inspiration and teacher to his grandchildren as they frequently came to visit and went along on his and Mary's volunteer projects.
Ralph is survived by his wife Mary, their three children, Ralph Jr. with his wife Barbara, Mark with his wife Win, and Elene Moore with her husband Wayne. Ralph has seven grandchildren, Michael
with his wife Clèm, and Dana Minopoli, Wade with his wife Stacy, Russell, Hayes, Colton and Keelea Moore, and one great-granddaughter, Violet Moore. He was truly blessed with his family and the care that they gave him.

Sad News:Thomas Connelly (ret 1985 RHLS English)
Thomas Leo Connelly, devoted husband
of 66 years to Rosario Oltra Connelly, died peacefully on Jan. 2 at his farm in Hillsboro, NH, surrounded by his family. He was 91.
Tom was born Nov. 5, 1930,
in Braddock, PA, to Thomas and Mary Lynch Connelly, immigrants from the West of Ireland. The family moved to the West Side of Manhattan when Tom was 2. He was the sixth of nine children. His mother died when he was 8.
Tom was an altar boy and received a Catholic education, but he had to leave school at 14 to help support the family. He worked for a time on the docks with his longshoreman father, then "rode the hump"
at the Jersey City rail yards. To pick up some extra cash, he boxed and played semipro basketball.
Tom enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean war and
attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was a training instructor for the first racially integrated classes at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
After
his discharge, Tom moved to Bridgeport, where he met Rose while both were working at Sikorsky Aircraft. He attended Teachers College of Connecticut (now Central Connecticut State University) on the G.I. Bill of Rights. He earned a master's degree from Wesleyan
University.
A lifelong learner and a lover of literature, especially poetry, Tom began his career teaching English at Central High School in Bridgeport, and
spent the bulk of his career at Roger Ludlowe High School in Fairfield. He retired in 1985 and left Fairfield to become a gentleman farmer in New Hampshire.
Tom
was an exceptional athlete. He competed in his first Boston Marathon in 1968, eventually running a personal best of 2 hours 54 minutes. At the age of 46, he ran a half-mile in 2 minutes flat. He was a gold medal winner in a relay, with his New York Pioneer
Club teammates, at the Masters Olympics in Gothenburg, Sweden. He continued to compete in road races into his late 70s. In His later years, he moved a lot of rocks.
Tom is survived by Rose, their children Tom (Diane), Mary (Joe), Katie (Elie), Rosie (Alan), Vinny (Hope), and Juliet (Thedo); grandchildren Thomas (Valerie), Peter, Sophia, Gerard (Alex), Joey, Sammy, Ari, Simi, Rosie (Jarrett), Vinny (Danielle),
Murray, Joe, Leo, Chernet and Ruth; and great-grandchildren Leo and James.
He was predeceased by his siblings Mary, Helen, John, Theresa and Gerard and is
survived by his siblings Valentine, Agnes and Ann.
Funeral services were held in Hillsboro.

Sad News: Ellen Siff (ret.2010 FWHS, Social Worker)
Ellen Kleinman Siff, age 80, passed away Thursday, November 4, 2021 at Bridgeport Hospital. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of Harry Kleinman and Molly
Heller Kleinman, who died when Ellen was a toddler. Her father remarried Florence Socha Kleinman (Spindel), who became her "beautiful golden-haired mother." Ellen was raised in Great Neck, N.Y. and graduated from Great Neck High School, the University of Rochester,
where she met Paul, the love of her life, and earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Missouri. A skilled clinician, she enjoyed a long career as a school social worker in the Fairfield public school system.
She is survived by Paul, her loving husband of 59 years, son Dave (Renae Wolter), daughter Rachel Levesque (Mike) and grandchildren Gabriel Siff and Madeleine Levesque. Ellen was a loving wife,
mother, and grandmother who cherished time with her family, a steadfast friend, a great cook, avid reader, lover of travel (France was her favorite destination), dance, music, and theater, family vacations on Cape Cod, and weekends spent in Greenwich Village.
Above all, Ellen was a warm and caring person for whom making other people happy was a great joy.
The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Gettinger, Dr.
Veronica Chiang, and Dr. Joachim Baehring and their staffs at Smilow Cancer Hospital, for the years of skillful and compassionate care they gave her, as well as Dr. Peter Cimino, Dr. Ari Pollack and Dr. Deborah Lipschitz; and the Medical ICU staff at Bridgeport
Hospital for the wonderful care they provided at the end of Ellen's life.

Sad News: Stewart Washburn ( ret 1983 AWHS Math)
Stewart (Stew) Washburn of Austin, TX (formerly of Fairfield, CT) found peace on October 17, 2021 after a long illness.
Stew was born September 5, 1925 in Marblehead, MA and grew up in Salem, MA. He attended Amherst College until he enlisted in the Army during WWII where he served as a navigator. Upon completing his
service, he finished his bachelor's degree at Middlebury College and later earned master's degrees at Columbia University and Boston College.
After college,
Stew taught mathematics and physics in Juneau, AK and later moved to a position at Conrad High School in Wilmington, DE where he met his wife, Barbara Butler. Soon after their marriage, Barb and Stew moved to Fairfield, CT to continue their teaching careers
and raise their family. Stew taught math at Fairfield's Andrew Warde High School and New Canaan High School, eventually becoming head of Warde's mathematics department before retiring in 1983.
Stew was well known for his love of music. He played drums in a Juneau community band and enjoyed his collection of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Mills Brothers, big-band swing, Beatles, and Elvis. He was also a lifelong
Red Sox fan who rejoiced with family and friends when, in 2004, the Curse of the Bambino was finally reversed and the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years.
Stew is predeceased by his parents, Eleanor and Bill Washburn, and his sister Nancy Bruley. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Barbara, daughter Kerry Washburn, son and daughter-in-law Jay and Cindy Washburn, granddaughters Daryle (Todd)
Adams and Jillian (Mark) Goodfellow, great-grandchildren Madelyn, Emma, Juliette, Angela and Mark, along with nieces and nephews.
A memorial celebration of Stew's life and loving nature will be held Tuesday, November 16, 2021 from 10am-12pm at Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield, CT. Burial will be private.

Sad News: Margie Betts (ret. Mill Hill, Grade 4))
Margaret Irene Sontra Betts passed away on October 22, 2021. Born to William and Irene Sontra on June 10, 1945, Margie was the middle child of three girls. She
grew up in Norwalk where she was in the 2nd graduating class from Brien McMahon High School. Margie went on to receive an education degree from Southern Connecticut University and took advanced classes on the gifted and talented at Columbia University and
obtained her 6th year at Sacred Heart University. Margie was a lifelong educator. She LOVED teaching. The saying "Teachers teach because it is their passion" applied to Margie. She constantly went the extra mile for all her students. Margie taught in Norwalk
School System's Academically Gifted and Talented Program for 10 years. She then spent a few years selling educational material for Trillium Publishing and working for Cooperative Educational Services before returning to teaching in the Fairfield School System
where she taught in the gifted and talented program and then 4th grade for a total of 18 years. Margie was the Odyssey of the Mind Connecticut State Director for many years and served as a judge for other states and at several national events. She was an active
church member, attending the Norwalk Hungarian Reformed Church until moving to Bridgeport, and then the Golden Hill United Methodist Church. Margie was fond of traveling with friends, trips to the casino for lessons in probability, and had a love for Saint
Maarten in the Caribbean. She is survived by her son Timothy Betts and his wife Jessica of Fuquay Varina, NC, her sisters Suzanne Virgulak and Linda Van Buskirk and her husband David, all of Norwalk, her grandchildren Blair and Zoey Betts of Holly Springs,
NC, her niece Christa Van Buskirk of Cromwell, her nephew Matthew Van Buskirk of Norwalk, and her soul mate Thomas Kelly of Bridgeport. A remembrance is scheduled for 1:30 PM on November 13th at Lesko & Polke Funeral

John P. Beggs, age 81, of Fairfield, beloved husband of Sara Beggs, passed away peacefully Sunday October 10, 2021. Born in Upper Sandusky, OH, he had been
a Fairfield resident for over 50 years. Mr. Beggs taught Social Studies at Andrew Warde High School for many years prior to his retirement. He was loved and respected by all of his students throughout his career. Survivors in addition to
his wife, Sara, include two beloved children, Stacey Haymon and her husband, Kris of Norwalk and David Beggs and his wife, Allison of Fairfield; two cherished granddaughters, Emily and Madeleine Beggs and three nieces. He was predeceased by his sister,
Sue Quellhorst. A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held Friday, October 15, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at First Church Congregational, 148 Beach Road,

Sad News: Lenny Martini (ret.1992 Instr. Music)
Leonard J. Martini ("Lenny") of Fairfield, beloved husband of Veronica M. Martini (deceased) of 59 years, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Sunday, June 6, 2021. He was born on March 20, 1930 in Bridgeport. He received a Bachelors and Masters degree from Julius Hartt College of Music, University of Hartford and a 6th Year Degree from Fairfield University. Leonard served in the US Army before starting his career as a music teacher. He had a tremendous passion for music and life. Leonard taught instrumental music for 33 years in the Fairfield Public Elemicentary Schools. After retirement in 1992, he was a music teacher at Green Farms Academy, Westport. Leonard was the Music Director for the Summer Concert Series at Penfield. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Gaelic American Club and Bridgeport Musician's Union. And, a long time Parishioner and head usher at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Leonard enjoyed golf, walking and was a member of the Teachers Bowling League. He loved to play the violin, clarinet and frequently entertained family and friends with the piano. Leonard especially enjoyed family vacations in the Berkshires and Mexico. He is survived by his daughter, Susan M. Martini of Fairfield, his son Michael J. Martini and wife Mary T. Martini and grandson, Zachary G. Martini of Stratford. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at 10 am, St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1719 Post Road Fairfield. Interment will follow at St. Michaels Cemetery, Stratford. Peter J. Carroll, 88, of Milford, CT, loving husband of 66 years to Florence P. (Reynolds) Carroll, passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2021.
Peter was born on Dec. 6, 1932, in Milford, CT, son of the late Joseph and Florence (Herting) Carroll.
After a longtime physical education teaching and coaching
career in Fairfield, CT, Peter retired in 1993. Peter also served on the Milford Planning & Zoning Board, Milford Transit District Board and was a member of the Milford Democratic Town Committee.
In addition to his wife, Peter is survived by his children, Christopher (Debby) Carroll, Shawn Carroll (Donna Cartwright), Colleen Carroll Noyes, all of Milford, and Stacie (Michael) DiNello of Deep River, CT; grandchildren

Sad News: Gene Karpinski, ret. 1980, principal Tomlinson
Eugene D. Karpinski (Gene) passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on April 27, 2021. He was 96 years old. Born April 8, 1925 to Adam and Agnes Karpinski of
Bridgeport, he was the second of three sons.
Gene met his wife Madlyn at Central High School. They married on December 27, 1949 and celebrated their 71st wedding
anniversary in December. His children and grandchildren surprised them with an outdoor celebration on their patio – a change from the 'Christmas in New York' tradition Eugene had organized every year for the past 20 years, treating the entire family
to Broadway shows, dinner at Carmine's, skating at Rockefeller Center, and taking in the sights and sounds of the Big Apple.
Gene served three years in the
US Navy during World War ll, aboard the battleship USS Texas. He saw action at D-Day, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He was aboard the Texas when they set a record for the most days (over 50) at battle ready stations in the South Pacific. Gene was honorably discharged
in 1946.
Like many of his generation, Gene attended college on the GI Bill. He graduated from Southern Connecticut Teachers' College and later got a master's
degree from Fairfield University. Gene built a career first as a math teacher and then as an administrator in the Fairfield Public School system. He was a mentor and colleague to many, making his mark at Grasmere School, then as assistant principal at Stratfield
and Tomlinson. For several decades, he was also active with the Boys' Club of Bridgeport.
Later he became principal at Riverfield and then Tomlinson, where
he supervised building additions that were dedicated in 1980. During this period, he was also an adjunct professor at Fairfield University's Graduate School of Education. He retired in June 1980 after 27 years of service in Fairfield. For six years after his
retirement, he was coordinator of a bilingual education program at Bullard Havens Technical High School in Bridgeport.
Grandchildren arrived one after the
next in the 1980s and 1990s. Whether it was a school play, a birthday, a big win or a tough loss, "Papa" and "Grammy" were always there and generous with their love and support. He was most proud to have attended all five of his grandchildren's high school
and college graduations, as well as two graduate school graduations. A lifelong educator, he imparted the value and discipline of academic curiosity to his children and grandchildren.
Gene was an athlete and avid sports fan. He approached sports with equal measures of competition and fairmindedness. Skilled in basketball, golf and baseball through college, he went on to coach and play in semi-pro leagues.
Gene was a conscientious and modest man, and a dedicated Roman Catholic. He was a giver. In time of need, Gene never asked, "What can I do?" He just did it. He was a
kidder with a twinkle in his eye, available for advice or a good laugh. Gene and Madlyn were a good team, rooting for the New York Knicks, playing daily Scrabble games, enjoying local and distant beaches, visiting family and traveling to their beloved Carmel,
CA and New York City many times. They called Southport their home for the last 65 years, enjoying gardening, friends and family.
He was predeceased by his
parents and his oldest brother, Edward Karpinski. He is survived by his wife Madlyn (Capasso) Karpinski, his son Gene Karpinski and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Collaton of Arlington, VA, his daughter Alane Karpinski Sullivan and son-in-law Jim Sullivan of Rye,
NH and his five loving grandchildren and biggest fans: Conor Sullivan of Virginia Beach, VA, Casey Sullivan of New York, NY, Andrew Karpinski of New York, NY, Curran Sullivan of Los Angeles, CA and Lauren Karpinski of Washington, D.C. He also leaves behind
his brother, Al Karpinski and many other relatives.
A Mass will be celebrated Friday, May 7, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Fairfield
(it will also be livestreamed at stanthonyffld.org).
Interment with Military Honors will follow in St. Michael Cemetery.

Sad News: Dan Lincoln (ret.2002, Tomlinson,RLHS,Ffld HS,Alternative Ed)
On Sunday, April 11, 2021, Daniel Kennedy Lincoln sauntered down the road less travelled one last time surrounded by nature following a warm sun shower. While he may have left this earth, he has gone on to hike many more mountains, fish many more streams, and paddle over many more ponds.
Daniel was born in Schenectady,
New York on November 9, 1937 to the late Powell Rogers Lincoln and Margaret Kennedy Lincoln. Soon after his birth his family moved to begin their life in Fairfield, Connecticut along with his brother, Herb Lincoln, who preceded him in passing. His love of
learning sprouted at an early age. His love for alternative learning and thinking outside of the box began in his early days at The Unquowa School and carried on with him to Fairfield Country Day School. He attended Proctor Academy in Andover, New Hampshire
where he developed a love of boat building and fostered his love for the mountains working the winters on ski patrol. He went on to graduate with the class of 1958. He then attended Emory and Henry College, where he became known for his infamous Angel Food
Cake with sprinkles and his love of honey. He graduated from Emory and Henry with a teaching degree and began his teaching career in Staunton River, Virginia where he taught and fought for integration of the school system. During his years in Virginia, he
was an active fighter for civil rights, participating in many Civil Rights Movement marches. He later returned to his home of Fairfield, Connecticut with his first wife and two children to build their life and continue his teaching journey in the Fairfield
Public School System. Alongside fellow innovative educators- Phil, Peter, Arnold and Joanne - he founded the Whole Earth Learning program for high school juniors at Roger Ludlowe High School to get students to think critically, question the status quo, and
get outside to appreciate nature and all its lessons. After years teaching high school students, he transitioned to Tomlinson Middle School where he taught geography and developed lessons that integrated all subjects from Math to English to Social Studies.
He became famous for his "Red Writing", which challenged students to utilize both right- and left-brain thinking. Students always remembered him for this, but also the detailed maps that they drew. Weekends were filled with grading poster-sized maps or globes
drawn on beach balls. His love of nature was shared with his students during their yearly hikes on the Appalachian Trail.
During his summers off from teaching,
early in his career, he worked at Camp ICC in Westport, Connecticut for inner-city children teaching film and photography. He fell in love with the arts and crafts counselor, Kathleen, who later became his second wife. They shared their love of art, learning,
and culture. They went on to adopt two daughters from the Dominican Republic. Kathleen and Daniel were married for 30 years before her passing in April 2009.
After retirement he enjoyed more time at his family's home in the Adirondacks. He spent his summers there hiking, canoeing, and fly fishing. He enjoyed the solitude of the North Country and its beautiful landscapes. He made great friendships with fly fishermen,
learning to tie flies; foresters, learning about trees and logging; and many more Adirondack characters. The Adirondacks held a special place in his heart as the family home had been passed down for four generations.
He is survived by his four children, Bartlett Lincoln Gowen (Chris) of Lynchburg, VA, Olivia Powell Lincoln of New York, NY, Daniel Dodge Lincoln, of Lynchburg, VA, and Marta "Erika"
Lincoln of Pennsville, New Jersey, and five grandchildren – Evelyn, Jane, Gabe, Mary Kate, and Markhel.
The family will hold a private celebration of life at a later date. It was Daniel's wish that everyone celebrates his life in their own way, whether it be yoga, planting a tree or a saunter in the woods.

Sad News: Jan Anderson (ret 1987, Grade 3, Jennings)
Janice "Jan" Anderson (born October 13, 1930) passed away on March 19, 2021. She lived her 90 years to the fullest. She was married to her
soul mate, Chuck, for 56 years until his passing in 2008. They met at Colby College and she remained active with the alumni community. Jan and Chuck raised their family in Fairfield, CT where she also taught elementary school until retiring to Harwich, MA.
She became a valued member of her community on the Cape, fulfilling her lifelong passion for theater by acting in local theater productions. She also enjoyed traveling, reading to the blind and playing golf. Jan lived the last several years in Middlebury,
VT and was involved in the Resident Council at The Residence at Otter Creek, reading to area schoolchildren and spending time with family. She is survived by her children, Scott (Suzy), Kirk (Cathy), Loryn (Joe) Hamilton and her daughter-in-law Susan (wife
of late son Timothy). She also leaves grandchildren, Kristy (Ted) Gillen, Peter (Becca) Hamilton, Molly, Collin and Corey Anderson and a great-grandson, Vann Hamilton.

Sad News: "Marty" Ryan (ret.1993, Math FHS)
Martin J. Ryan, Jr., 89 of Southport, the beloved husband of 65 years of the late Arline M. Ryan, passed away peacefully at home on February
15, 2021. He was born in Ansonia to the late Ethel (Gittings) and Martin J. Ryan, Sr. and was a longtime area resident.
Mr. Ryan was the world's best math
teacher and will be fondly remembered by countless students and parents in Fairfield. He shared his love of learning and teaching with his children and grandchildren. Known affectionately as the Dynasty Commander, he was happiest when surrounded by family.
He loved to spend time at the shore with everyone. He was a life-long Mets fan, and also avidly followed college basketball. Marty put hundreds of miles on his bicycle on daily rides along the coast of Southport and Westport. He could fix anything in his "well-equipped
and staffed" workshop.
Martin is survived by his daughters, Kathleen Dusto and her husband Timothy of Cary, NC, Christine Toole and her husband Michael of
Warren, PA; and his sons, Kenneth Ryan and his wife Doreen of Hatfield, MA and Martin P. Ryan and his wife Wendy of Bridgeport. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Sarah, David, Amy, Ian, Ryan, Jacob, Benjamin, Kelly and Megan as well as seven great-grandchildren.

Ann M. Spencer of Trumbull, Ct., aged 91, passed away while comforted by her family on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport after a short illness. She will be deeply missed.
A private family service will be held with a memorial concert planned for a later date.
Ann was born in Worcester, Mass., on February 28, 1929 and grew up
in Orange, Mass. She was predeceased by husband Charles E. Spencer and her parents, James and Edna Blanchard McElroy. She leaves her loving sons, William Spencer and wife Laura Ferrari of Monroe, Ct., and David Spencer and his wife Shannon O'Brien of Bennington,
Vt., her cherished granddaughter, Anna Spencer, of Champaign, Ill., her sister Jane Ross and brother-in-law Dr. Philip Ross of Bethesda, Md.
She graduated
from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and completed graduate work at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. Later, she earned two master's degrees: her first in education from Southern Connecticut State College, and second in English from the
University of Bridgeport. She additionally earned her Sixth-Year Certificate in Educational Administration from Fairfield University.
She enjoyed a long teaching
career, first teaching Language Arts at the elementary level in Bridgeport and later English at Roger Ludlowe and Andrew Warde High Schools in Fairfield, where she also started the debate club.
She
was a member and past president of various local organizations, including the Retired Educators of Fairfield, the Bridgeport Branch of the American Association of University Women for 70 years, the Wednesday Afternoon Musical Club and the Bridgeport chapter
of the Mount Holyoke Club. She was a member of national and state educational organizations and of the Association of Retired Teachers of Connecticut.
Ann had been a board member of Learning for a
Lifetime at the Bigelow Center for Senior Activities in Fairfield, where she also conducted classes in her teaching fields: poetry, short story and play reading.
She
was a member of the Eunice Dennie Burr Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Appalachian Mountain Club of Fairfield County.
Ann was
a soprano soloist in various area churches, among them the Christian Science Church of Bridgeport, the First Baptist Church of Bridgeport and Nichols United Methodist Church of Trumbull.
Married for 61 years, Ann and her husband Charlie, whom she always considered her best friend, were devoted parents who loved to travel and entertain, accumulating many life-long friends on their journey and maintaining the original
"social network" that matters most to a life well lived.
