Sad News: Steve Smith (ret. Stratfield School 1999)

Stephen R. Smith, an award-winning teacher in Fairfield Public Schools for more than 35 years, died, October 3, 2020. in Chesterfield, MO. He was 84.

Steve taught in the Fairfield Public Schools for more than 35 years, but he created ripple effects felt across the world.
Mr. Smith taught sixth, then fifth grade in Fairfield, starting at Grasmere School in 1965. When Grasmere closed in 1981, he moved to Stratfield School, where he remained until his retirement in 1999.
He taught a wide variety of subjects, but specialized in Math and Social Studies. While at Stratfield, he was named the Connecticut Math Teacher of the Year. He wanted his students to learn how to apply the subjects to everyday life. He drew acclaim for his multi-part lesson, “Let’s Build a Playground,” which used the planning of a playground to teach groups of students how to devise, plan and oversee a project, manage a budget, and be collaborative.
Mr. Smith helped create a groundbreaking multimedia educational series, “Insights & Ideas” in the 1970s. The multi-unit Humanities project featured books, audio tapes and film strips.
He combined his love of teaching and his Jewish faith by teaching sixth and seventh grades for 25 years at Congregation B’nai Israel in Bridgeport, where he also was a congregant. He helped create cutting-edge classes for seventh-graders on “Death and Dying.”
Smith’s students went on to make their marks in a wide range of vocations, including business, medicine, acting, professional tennis and music. Former students constantly approached him to tell him how he had made a difference in their lives – anywhere in the world.
“Our family was on vacation in Europe in the early 1980s and sitting in a café on the Champs d’Elysee in Paris,” his son, Scott, recalled. “My mom teased him that we were finally somewhere where we could be the Smiths and not Mr. Smith’s family. Right on cue, from across the street, we hear a man cry out, ‘Oh wow, it’s Mr. Smith. He was my teacher in sixth grade.’ It turned out to be a student from one of his first classes at Grasmere, on vacation with his family.”
Stephen Robert Smith was born on July 20, 1936, in Hartford to Mitchell and Ida (Norman) Smith. He was raised in Springfield, Mass., where he graduated from Classical High School and American International College.
Mr. Smith intended to pursue a career in business, but a friend suggested he try teaching. He quickly realized he had found his true calling, and earned a master’s degree in Education from Westfield (Mass.) State College. He then taught in West Brookfield, Mass., before moving to Fairfield.
Mr. Smith was an avid golfer and devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox. He also passionately followed the Boston Celtics, New England Patriots and UConn Women’s Basketball. An accomplished recorder player, he recorded an album, “Fond Memories,” with his friend and fellow educator, Robert Gillette.
After retiring from teaching in 1999, Mr. Smith and his wife, Linda, moved to Georgetown, Texas, the next year. They moved to Chesterfield, Mo., earlier this year.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 57 years, Linda Paris Smith; two children, Scott Smith (Susan Zweibaum) of Fairfield, and Lisa Smith Goodman (Gary Goodman) of Chesterfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, Casey, Elena, Brett and Evan; a sister, Beverly Jackowitz of Simsbury; a brother, Stuart Smith, of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina; and a brother-in-law, Michael Paris, of Ooij, Netherlands.
The family asks to have donations made in his honor to the Fairfield Foundation for Education (http://www.fairfieldffe.org/honor-an-educator/) or the Gillette Judaic Enrichment Fund at Congregation B’nai Israel (www.cbibpt.org).

I received this note from REF member, Bob Gillette (http://www.refblog.org/318550898 ), onSaturday, Oct. 3, 2020, and I wanted to include it with Steve's obituary:

Paula,

Hope you are well and safe. I just received a call from Scott Smith (Steve's son) to inform me that Steve Smith died last night. Steve was a very good friend. He taught mostly fifth grade at Grasmere and Stratfield Schools. He was an excellent teacher known for his high standards that prepared his students well. He was innovative with forever working through new approaches to teaching. He was a staunch teacher and student advocate. I worked with Steve in several capacities in the Fairfield School system and at Congregation B'nai Israel Religious School where he taught for many years. Steve was a quality guy, loved and respected. We played recorder together for many years. Scott will be contacting you. So many of my generation of teachers are dying, seemingly all at once. A very sad time, but one of celebration for a life well-lived.

Be well.

Retired FEA President, Anne Pasco, writes the following:

I was saddened to read in the Post obits today of the passing of Maynard.  I knew him and his Wife, Kathy.  On a couple of occasions, I would get a call at night- Anne please come over, Kathy is in labor, we need you to stay with our kids.

I also taught in the same unit with him- Fitts House, just a couple doors down the hall from me.

After the Kent State killings, we drove to D.C. and were part of the huge protest in the Ellipse.

Maynard was a warm, kind, gentle soul.  His success in the classroom was in part due to his gift of weaving the art of story-telling into his lessons.

May his family be comforted in this time of grief. Sadly, he died of complications of covid, joining the 200,000 other souls whom we as a nation mourn.

Paula Sweeley, REF Blog Editor, writes the following:

September 20, 2020

Sincere condolences to Maynard's loved ones. I never met Maynard in person, but he and I were email pals for years. Maynard started emailing me through our Fairfield retired teacher organization. He had a lively interest in EVERYTHING and shared his thoughts freely and entertainingly. He spoke very warmly about his teaching years and the warm memories he had of students and co-workers. Though we never met in person, I consider his passing as my loss of a dear and loving friend. Rest in peace, Maynard. You made the world a better place, and you will be sorely missed.

Sad News: Dan Bruno (ret. 1999 RLMS, P. E.)

Daniel Christopher Bruno, loving father, grandfather and friend, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2020 at age 81, after a period of declining health. Dan was bE.)orn on November 6, 1938 in Norwalk, CT to Dominic P. and Carmela (Bottone) Bruno.

After graduating from Norwalk High School in 1955, Dan proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1955-1959. He then worked at a variety of jobs prior to and while attending college, including driving a school bus, working in sales for Burndy Corp., and several years as personal driver for Bette Davis. Dan met Carolyn Cunningham in 1964 and they were married after a 6-month courtship in February, 1965. They raised two daughters, Carynne and Blair. Although they divorced after 23 years, they maintained a connection through their children and their granddaughter, Sophia. Dan was a wonderful father and an even better grandfather.

Dan graduated in 1969 from Southern CT State University with a bachelor’s degree in education. He went on to earn both a master’s degree in education and a sixth-year teaching degree from Fairfield University. An educator at heart, Dan spent his entire 30-year career as a physical education teacher, a vocation he loved and was clearly born for. Over the decades, he taught thousands of Fairfield students in several schools, including Grasmere and Oldfield Elementary Schools and more than 20 years at Fairfield Woods Junior High/Middle School. Although he was a physical education teacher (please do not call it “gym”), students often found to their dismay that he was also a firm believer in grammar, proper English, and writing skills. When he retired from teaching, his “retirement hobby” allowed him to pursue his other passion: driving. During that 10+ years, his drive-your-car service attracted a large and loyal following of clients who were more than happy to have him drive them in their luxury vehicles to and from airports, outings in NYC, and second homes all over the tri-state area. He loved driving and prided himself on his exhaustive knowledge of alternative routes and his ability to get anyone where they needed to be, on time.

Dan loved music, from his childhood playing the accordion in a big band on the radio, playing the flute and piccolo in the Fife and Drum Corp, to playing the piano at some really great parties and singing in the church choir as an elder at Calvin Church. He was a voracious reader, a lover of crossword puzzles (but only in pen, please), and a big fan of jigsaw puzzles. He loved his time with the Poets’ Society. He had some strong opinions. He loved his family. And when someone needed him, he showed up.

Dan was preceded in death by his father, Dominic, his mother, Carmela, and his older sister, Irene. He is survived by his daughters, Carynne (Bruno) Fillmore of Henniker, NH and Blair (Bruno) Turnbull of Stratford, CT, his daughter-in-law Karen O’Donnell, his much-beloved granddaughter Sophia Turnbull, and his many cousins, friends, and former students.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, February 17, 2020 from 4 – 7 p.m. at Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road in Fairfield. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Calvin United Church of Christ, 901 Kings Highway East in Fairfield. A private burial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fairfield Police Athletic League, PO Box 423, Fairfield, CT 06824.

Sad News: Lou Hada (ART in Fairfield and other CT towns)

Louis Warren Hada, of Stratford, CT passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 5, 2020. He was the devoted husband of 53 years to Marcia Danberg Hada. In addition to his beloved wife Marcia, he is survived by his loving daughter, Jennifer Hada and her husband, Troy Gayeski of New Canaan, CT along with his grandchildren, Jayden and Jaxon, who Louis loved dearly and thought the world of. He is also survived by several siblings, nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law, Linda Danberg Peck. He was pre-deceased by his brother Edward Hada, who also passed recently. Louis was born in Bridgeport, CT on October 2 and lived a full and rich life. In his early years, he served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, but later earned his Master's degree and was a thesis short of his Doctorate degree. Mr. Hada went on to pursue a career as a teacher and taught in many different towns in CT. He was an art teacher for the Fairfield Public School system for many years and then as a teacher of Blueprint Reading and Mechanical Drafting at Bullard Havens Technical School, where he retired. It was common to hear a call-out of … "Mr. Hada" from a previous student, when out at a restaurant or in a store somewhere, as he touched the hearts of many students and was admired greatly everywhere he taught. A lover of books and avid reader, he was also a talented artist who enjoyed drawing, painting, sculpting and making jewelry. He also loved nature, crystals and stones and was intrigued with all stone work. For years, he built many intricate stone walls all around his property for which he later received a Stratford Town Beautification Award. He and his wife owned many businesses in CT and were shop owners in Provincetown, MA for over 25 years, where he and his family enjoyed life to the fullest. Provincetown and Cape Cod, MA is where his heart always lived and he vacationed there with his family every year. He enjoyed the simple things and was happy just enjoying a coffee and stroll down Commercial Street. A beachcomber, he loved visiting the sunny, relaxing beaches every day as well. Louis was also fond of travel and enjoyed many memory-filled vacations with his adventurous family to locations ranging from Europe and an amazing European cruise, a California coast tour, Las Vegas, NV, Key West and Disneyworld, FL, and even a trip to Mt. Tremblant, Canada. Watch Hill, Rhode Island was where he spent many days during the summertime with his family. It was also a favorite place where he loved to read, enjoy the sun, walk the beach and pick up 'only the best stones' with Jayden and Jaxon. The past two summers he went to Bar Harbor, Maine with his family and could not stop commenting how much he really loved it there, and how scenic and beautiful it was.
A philosophical and intellectual soul and mentor, amazing and loving husband, father and grandfather. A nature and animal lover, forever beachcomber and artist. Friend to many. He loved his thoughtful and caring neighbors and always spoke of them as if they were family. He will be greatly missed to all who knew and loved him. We miss and love you Gaga, and you are forever in our hearts and thoughts.
At the request of Mr. Hada, a private interment took place in Mt. Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport, CT. He was a lover of nature and animals and it has been requested to forgo any flowers, but have donations in his memory made to the Stratford Animal Rescue Society, 225 Beacon Point Rd., Stratford, CT 06615 contact@stratfordanimalrescue.org. To offer online condolences, please visit:

Jane Gallow: teacher of the deaf (Fairfield, Milford, Wilton)

Jane C. Gallow, 66, of Fairfield, CT, passed away peacefully at home on July 23, 2019, surrounded by her family. Our beautiful and beloved Jane has joined our Heavenly Father and her parents, William Alexander Gallow and Eunice Pulcine Gallow, in eternal companionship and peace. Jane (Janie, as she was known to family and friends) grew up in New Britain, CT. She graduated from Central Connecticut State University and earned a Master of Education in Special Education of the Hearing Impaired from Boston University. She began her teaching career in Montgomery County, Maryland before relocating to her home state of Connecticut, where she taught for more than 30 years, primarily in the Fairfield Public Schools and later in the Wilton and Milford Public Schools. Jane was, first and foremost, the matriarch of her family, and also the best friend or favorite teacher to many. A loving and devoted mother, nothing was more important to Jane than her children, Deanna and Sandy. She participated uncompromisingly in their education and activities, helping with homework, attending countless piano rehearsals, ballet lessons, recitals, sports practices and games. Full of love, compassion and generosity of spirit, she was a second mother to many. Family and friends were Jane's delight. She loved vacationing every summer on Martha's Vineyard with family and the many friends she would invite. The hot summer days on South Beach and the crisp December nights of "Christmas in Edgartown" were her favorites to spend time with family. She looked forward to returning as soon as she stepped off the ferry in Woods Hole. Nothing made her happier than making everyone a sandwich for a long day at the beach. She relished family excursions, making sure that all appreciated the richness of being together as a family. Always ready to welcome anyone into her home with a contagious smile, she treated all like family. Just like her mother, she loved preparing heartwarming meals for family and friends, especially over the Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays. She was delighted to invite those without plans to join in on her holiday gatherings. Jane is survived by Fernando de Arango; Deanna de Arango Grant, and husband, Alistair, of Fairfield, CT, Alexander "Sandy" de Arango and wife, Logan, of Boston, MA; sister, Cheryl Delldonna, and her husband, Anthony, of New Britain, CT; nieces and nephews, Michaela and Curtis Thierling of West Stockbridge, MA and Christopher Pandolfi of Wilbraham, MA. Lastly, by her beloved Labrador and constant companion, Maisie. The family wishes to thank those who cared for Jane during her courageous battle, as well as those who extended love and support throughout her life. She was and will always be the constant light of her family's lives. Friends and family can celebrate Jane's life during calling hours on Thursday, August 1 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. All other services will be held privately.
